The story
In the ancient borgo of San Desiderio, just outside central Genoa, Bruxaboschi has been feeding locals since the days of Italian unification. The trattoria occupies a robust stone building that once housed a 19th-century social club for the Swiss community of Genoa. Legend has it that Giuseppe Mazzini himself visited when staying at a nearby villa. The interior retains its original character: squared rooms, rustic finishes, and old utensils kept as ornaments.
The kitchen at Bruxaboschi is a temple of Genoese recipes. The menu reads like a catalogue of regional classics: stoccafisso accomodato (stockfish prepared in the Genoese style), coniglio alla ligure (rabbit with olives and pine nuts), minestrone alla genovese, and mandilli de saea – the silk handkerchief pasta with pesto. Other dishes include cappon magro, tomaxelle, and brandacujun (dried cod with potatoes). The restaurant celebrates its heritage with a series of "recipes from the 160 years of Bruxaboschi," each one a careful preservation of local flavours.
Outside, a beautiful terrace shaded by centuries-old horse chestnut trees offers a cool retreat in Genoa's hot summers. The wine list is extensive, with a strong selection of natural wines – over 30% of the bottles are natural, a fact recognised by the RAISIN app. Bruxaboschi is also a proud member of FIVI, the Italian Federation of Independent Winegrowers.
The quality and value of Bruxaboschi's cooking have earned it a place in the Michelin Guide Italy since 2024, with a Bib Gourmand award for 2026. This accolade confirms what regulars have known for decades: honest, skilful Ligurian cooking served in a setting that feels both historic and welcoming. Whether you come for a leisurely lunch on the terrace or a dinner in the intimate saletta, Bruxaboschi delivers the flavours of Genoa, unchanged and uncompromised.
