The story

Osteria della Foce in Genoa – Seasonal Country Cooking, Michelin Recommended

A Genoese Osteria Rooted in Seasonality

Since opening in December 2017, Osteria della Foce has focused on a straightforward philosophy: fresh ingredients, seasonal menus, and careful technique. The kitchen follows what they call the “right kilometer” approach—sourcing basil from their own garden, oranges from Sicily, and berries from Trentino, rather than limiting themselves to a strict local-only radius. This commitment to quality has earned the restaurant a Michelin Recommended distinction, a nod to its consistent, ingredient-driven cooking.

The cuisine is best described as country cooking, with an emphasis on express preparation. Every dish is cooked to order, which means a short wait, but also means each plate arrives with the attention it deserves. The team makes their own pasta, bread, and desserts in-house, and in the evenings, fresh farinata is prepared on the spot.

What to Expect on the Plate

The menu changes frequently to reflect what’s best at the market, but the style is consistent: well-executed Italian classics with a modern sensibility. Starters might include a homemade mini lamb pie with brown stock, or a cappon magro of amberjack. Among the first courses, hand-rolled plin filled with ombrina fish come with a creamy datterini tomato sauce and basil oil, while beef ravioli are dressed simply with butter, thyme, and Parmigiano.

For second courses, roast veal with cherry jus and sautéed asparagus sits alongside a beef tagliata with roasted potatoes. Seared cuttlefish with vegetables and peanut sauce offers a lighter option. Desserts are made in-house, from a hay semifreddo with chocolate crumble to a bavarese with pine nuts, raspberries, and white chocolate. The wine list features around 100 labels, including Gaja, Antinori, and a selection of foreign wines and sparkling options. Local Ligurian craft beer from Altavia is also available.

The Space and Setting

Located on Via Eugenio Ruspoli in the Foce district of Genoa, the osteria is open for lunch and dinner Monday through Friday, and for dinner only on Saturdays. The atmosphere is relaxed and unfussy, with outdoor seating available when the weather allows. Private parties can also be arranged. It’s a place where the food speaks for itself—no gimmicks, just honest, well-sourced country cooking that has rightly caught the attention of Michelin’s inspectors.
