The story

Arkade Cigoj in Gorizia: Award-Winning Slovenian Farm Cuisine in the Vipava Valley

Arkade Cigoj in Gorizia delivers honest Slovenian farm cuisine anchored in the agricultural rhythms of the Vipava Valley.

Generations in the Vineyard

Jordan and Silva Cigoj took over the property in 1989, continuing a lineage established by parents Branko and Zmaga that traces back to a stone portal marking the original house built in 1811. A new agricultural building completed in 1996 expanded the workspace, allowing the family to process more of the harvest directly on-site. Produce arrives straight from their own fields and livestock, eliminating intermediaries between the soil and the table. This dedication ensures that the flavors remain unadulterated and deeply connected to the microclimate shaped by the burja wind and sun-baked slopes.

Hearty Plates and Local Ingredients

The kitchen honors these roots within the realm of Slovine cuisine by preparing firm gnocchi enriched with sausage and radicchio, or broad noodles dressed in a thick Mangalica ragout. A homemade mushroom soup rounds out the savory progression before the pasta courses arrive. A beef tagliata offers a juicy alternative for grilled meat lovers, while the meal often commences with a wooden board laden with homemade salami and pancetta alongside artisanal cheeses. Pickled vegetables frequently accompany the board, adding a sharp acidity that balances the richness of the cured products. Sourdough bread baked fresh each day spreads house-rendered lard, providing a crunchy counterpoint to the tender meats.

Wine Expertise and Sweet Endings

Maja Cigoj holds the distinction of being crowned Wine Queen in 2005, bringing professional knowledge to a cellar curated around excellent regional whites and reds. Sweet finales include pear pancakes paired with vanilla ice cream or a light soufflé bursting with raspberry cream. Visitors can browse the adjacent shop for vacuum-packed cured meats and glass jars of preserves, carrying the spirit of Slovine farm cooking home well after the last bite.
