The story
On the panoramic Piazza del Municipio in Lipari, steps from the neolithic castle that houses the Museo Eoliano, Filippino has been a fixture for over 100 years. What began as a rustic, characterful trattoria is now a modern yet welcoming restaurant with two indoor dining rooms and a large, air-conditioned terrace. The atmosphere remains unmistakably Aeolian – warm, unhurried, and rooted in the island’s traditions.
The kitchen focuses on Seafood and Sicilian cuisine, drawing on the day’s catch from the surrounding waters and the best local produce: island vegetables, olive oils, and herbs. The menu changes with the seasons, but signatures include a swordfish roll with artichoke cream and baby squid with pecorino fonduta, or casarecce with lemon pesto and shrimp tartare. Chef Bernardi’s caper pesto – a raw sauce of desalted capers, cucunci, cherry tomatoes, almonds, basil, mint, and chilli – is a standout, served over pasta or on hot bruschetta with caciocavallo.
The wine list is equally considered, with more than 100 labels and some 80 grappas, many from the Aeolian Islands and Sicily.
Filippino’s consistency and dedication to authentic, high-quality cooking have earned it a Michelin Recommended award – a fitting recognition for a restaurant that has spent a century perfecting the flavours of its home.
