The story
The name says it all. In Livorno, “fare a zighene” means to split something in half, to share a plate. Over time the phrase shortened to “fare a zighe” – and “zighe” also happens to be the local word for telline, those tiny clams that define so much of the city’s cooking. Azzighe • Osteria a metà is, at its core, a restaurant built around sharing.
Simone and Francesca are the two halves behind this osteria. Their story is one of distance and return: they left Livorno to better understand its essence, then came back enriched by experiences elsewhere, ready to celebrate the city’s cuisine with clarity and passion. The result is a place that feels both rooted and fresh.
The kitchen focuses on Tuscan modern cuisine, drawing from the traditions of Livorno but approaching them with a contemporary eye. The wine list leans natural, supporting the idea that simplicity and quality go hand in hand. The atmosphere is relaxed, the sort of spot where a meal stretches into the evening.
This approach earned Azzighe a Bib Gourmand from Michelin, an award that recognises good quality, good value cooking. It’s a fitting nod to an osteria that keeps things honest: local ingredients, clear flavours, and the pleasure of sharing a table.
Simone and Francesca sum it up with a quote from Dead Poets Society: “Just when you think you know something, you have to look at it in a different way.” At Azzighe, that means taking Livorno’s culinary heritage and seeing it anew – one shared plate at a time.
