The story
Since 1976, I Due Cippi has been a fixture on the elegant Piazza Vittorio Veneto in Saturnia, a small town in the Maremma region of Tuscany. The restaurant is a family affair, run by brothers Lorenzo and Alessandro, who have inherited and elevated the vision of their father, Michele, a man remembered as a pioneer of taste in the area. The atmosphere is one of warm, refined hospitality: the dining rooms feature exposed beams and brick vaults, with large fireplaces that warm the space and set the stage for the restaurant's true focus.
Lorenzo is the "Meat Master," and his domain is the large fireplace that dominates the entrance. He and his team have elevated the concept of grilling to a "brace gourmet" — a gourmet approach to cooking over embers. The kitchen follows the seasons, highlighting the best of Maremma and Tuscan produce, and while the menu includes modern takes on traditional "poor" dishes like trippa alla toscana and fried lamb's brain, the heart of the experience is the meat.
I Due Cippi selects its beef from certified, ethical farms where animals are pasture-raised without hormones. The restaurant has long practiced dry-aging, following the process from the start. Steaks — including Fiorentina and costata — are cooked over the open fire, a ritual that has earned the restaurant a place among the world's best steakhouses and a Michelin Recommended award.
Alessandro, the welcoming host, has transformed the family's small wine cellar into a destination of its own. With over a thousand labels, the list focuses on the excellence of Tuscany but also spans the best of Italy and France, including great Bordeaux and a fine selection of Champagne. The vault’s climate-controlled conditions allow for the service of mature vintages from the 1970s, 80s, and 90s, making for an exceptional pairing with a classic cuisine that is both rooted in tradition and confidently modern.
