The story
Sitting on the terrace of Gasthof Oberlechner, you look out over the Etschtal and the Vinschgau valley. The sun moves slowly across the vineyards and orchards below. The air is clear. This is the setting for a meal that is quietly memorable.
The Oberlechner, run by the Gamper family, sits in Vellau, a hamlet above Algund, at almost 1,000 metres above sea level. It is a classic South Tyrolean inn — the kind of place where the rhythm of the day is set by the mountains. Hikers and bikers stop here for a break. Locals come for a glass of wine. And guests who have discovered it through the Michelin guide return year after year.
The kitchen follows the traditions of the region. The approach is straightforward: good ingredients, carefully prepared. The menu changes with the seasons, but the spirit remains the same. This is the classic cuisine of South Tyrol, served without fuss. You can enjoy it in one of the cosy wood-panelled parlours, or outside on the terrace with that view. A glass of local wine or a homemade fruit juice completes the picture.
Michelin recognised the quality of this place with a Recommended award — a nod to the skill in the kitchen and the warmth of the welcome. But the Oberlechner is not about formality. It is about the simple pleasure of a good meal in a beautiful place.
The restaurant is also well suited for celebrations — birthdays, weddings, first communions. The team can arrange private parties, and there is plenty of parking. The inn is open daily (except Wednesday) for lunch and dinner, with the kitchen serving from 12:00 to 14:00 and 18:00 to 20:30.
Whether you arrive by car, by bus line 235, or by the chairlift from Algund, the Oberlechner welcomes you. It is a place where the view and the food work together, and where you can simply sit and enjoy.
