The story
J Contemporary Japanese Restaurant began in 2014 in the nearby town of Portici, a small 30-seat space that quickly became a reference for modern Japanese cooking in Campania. The success led to the opening of a second, more ambitious restaurant in Naples – a 450-square-metre space on Via Agostino Depretis, in the city’s historic centre. The Naples location, described by the restaurant as its “quartier generale” – iconic, majestic, the essence of J – has since been recognised by the Michelin Guide, a testament to the quality and consistency of the kitchen.
Every detail at J is deliberate. The restaurant describes itself as a work of art, from the careful selection of materials to the studied atmosphere. The spaces are designed for luxury and comfort, with an emphasis on elegance that extends from the dining room to the private chef’s table and counter dining. The cuisine is built on carefully sourced ingredients, treated with skill to bring out authentic, surprising flavours. While the techniques are rooted in Japanese tradition, the soul of the kitchen is firmly tied to Campania, making the food both precise and personal.
The Naples restaurant is the flagship of a small group that also includes locations in Portici and Sorrento (the latter on the rooftop of the Hilton Palace, with a view of the Bay of Naples). A fourth location in Florence is coming soon. The restaurant also offers catering and a private chef-at-home service, bringing the J experience to special events or intimate dinners. Whether you sit at the counter or at a table, the service is attentive, the sake list noteworthy, and the atmosphere refined without being stiff. For those seeking contemporary Japanese dining in Naples, J is a destination that earns its Michelin recommendation.
