The story
Since 1870, L'Antica Pizzeria da Michele has anchored the vibrant Forcella district of Naples. The philosophy is stated plainly on their website: “Our secret? Simplicity and love for tradition.” With a menu of only four pizzas, the focus is uncompromising. Every ingredient comes from Campania’s finest producers – the flour, the fior di latte, the olive oil – ensuring that each bite reflects a century and a half of craft. This dedication earned the pizzeria a Michelin Recommended award, a recognition that underscores its place among the world’s great pizza destinations.
Here, the pizza is a pure, focused expression of Neapolitan tradition. The short menu guarantees quality: the classic Margherita and Marinara lead, prepared with the exacting technique of “a ruota di carro” (cartwheel-style). The dough is leavened slowly, then baked in a wood-fired oven. In recent years, the pizzeria has also become the first pizza in the world to be certified via blockchain through the Authentico platform, providing full traceability of its supply chain – a modern seal on an ancient practice.
Beyond the dining room, the restaurant offers a deeper immersion into its world. The “Da Michele Experience” includes a visit to an intimate museum housed within the same building, where historical artifacts – vintage Coca-Cola bottles, Peroni signs, and post-war pizza-making tools – tell the story of the Condurro family. Guests can then learn to make their own pizza under the guidance of a master pizzaiolo, from mixing the dough to the iconic “schiaffo” slap technique, before baking their creation in a real wood-fired oven. An optional extension adds a tour of the 15th-century Chiesa della Disciplina della Santa Croce, a hidden gem in the heart of Forcella.
Over the decades, Da Michele has welcomed everyone from local Neapolitans to global icons. Diego Maradona and Julia Roberts (who famously visited during the filming of Eat Pray Love) are among the VIPs who have waited in line for a table. Despite its international fame, the pizzeria remains resolutely Neapolitan in atmosphere – a bustling, no-frills space where the pizza speaks for itself. It is a living piece of the city’s culinary soul.
