The story

Michelasso, Naples: Contemporary Gourmet with Neapolitan Soul

Philosophy and Founder

Michelasso is the realisation of a long-held dream for Lucio Sindaco, a Neapolitan who brought his innate warmth and love for good food to a small, elegant space in the historic centre. The name comes from an old local saying: “Bella la vita del Michelasso, che mangia, beve e va a spasso.” Life should be enjoyed – and here, that means slowing down over a meal that feels both luxurious and intimate. The philosophy is lightness, as a lifestyle. No rigid codes, just a contemporary approach to Neapolitan tradition, where seasonality and high-quality ingredients (many DOP and IGP, sourced from small local producers) are treated with respect.

Location and Atmosphere

Set on two floors, Michelasso is a modern, clean-lined refuge. The interiors mix antique pieces with contemporary design, creating a collection that feels personal and unhurried. The dining rooms are intimate, and the service is discreet but attentive. From the tables, you are moments away from the city’s main sights, yet the atmosphere is a world apart – a place where time slows and the focus is on the plate and the company.

The Cuisine

The kitchen reinterprets Neapolitan classics with freedom and instinct. Fish is central, sourced from small boats fishing sustainably overnight and delivered fresh each morning. Pasta, bread and desserts are made by hand. The result is a contemporary cuisine that balances tradition with surprise, simplicity with depth. A tasting menu is available, and the wine list is a carefully curated mix of Italian and international labels, with a strong selection of local bottles.

Standout Dishes

Among the signature dishes, the Tonno – lightly seared tuna tataky with citrus dressing, aioli and basil mayonnaise – plays with temperature and texture. The Cappelletto is a filled pasta with Neapolitan ragù of short ribs, served with a bread sauce and smoked provola. The Rana pescatrice pairs monkfish with provola and friarielli, a classic Neapolitan green. To finish, the Babà is a rum-soaked sponge with vanilla gelato, precise and satisfying.

Recognition

Michelasso’s commitment to quality and its own vision of contemporary dining has earned it a Michelin Recommended distinction, a fitting nod to a restaurant that values lightness, conviviality and the pleasure of a well-made meal.
