The story
In the heart of Naples’ Chiaia district, Urubamba brings a distinctive fusion of Peruvian and Japanese culinary traditions to southern Italy. The restaurant’s name, taken from a river in Peru’s Cusco region that flows past the ancient Inca city of Machu Picchu, serves as a metaphor for its cooking: a journey that begins in Peru, meets Japanese gastronomic precision, and arrives in Naples enriched by new flavours.
Founded in 2017 by Dario Cecaro and Vincenzo Ricciolino, Urubamba was the first Nikkei restaurant in southern Italy. Chef Keisuke Aramaki leads the kitchen, supported by Peruvian chefs including Nicky Ramos and Italo Ariash. The team’s commitment to quality ingredients and constant experimentation earned the restaurant a place in the prestigious Michelin Guide in 2022, making it the first Nikkei restaurant in Italy to receive this recognition. Around the same time, the Peruvian tourism board PromPerú awarded Urubamba the title of “promoter of Peruvian gastronomic culture,” a distinction granted to only one entity in Europe.
In March 2024, Urubamba moved to a new three-level space on Via Gaetano Filangieri, Naples’ main shopping street. The ground floor houses an elegant cocktail bar, while the first-floor main dining room features refined floral motifs and a private salon. Upstairs, the rooftop terrace offers panoramic views and a romantic atmosphere for evening dining. The décor blends Peruvian-inspired details with Japanese minimalism, creating an atmosphere that is both elegant and welcoming.
The Nikkei cuisine here balances Japanese rigour and simplicity with Latin American flair. The result is a menu of dishes that draw on both traditions, served in a setting that feels intimate yet glamorous. With its Michelin recommendation and unique position as a pioneer of Nikkei cooking in Italy, Urubamba offers a dining experience that is genuinely singular in Naples.
