The story
In the heart of Palermo’s Kalsa district, Osteria dei Vespri occupies the ancient walls of Palazzo Gangi – the same palazzo where Luchino Visconti filmed the grand ball scene in Il Gattopardo. The restaurant’s motto, “Respira la storia e gusta il momento” (Breathe history and taste the moment), captures the atmosphere: a quiet, refined space that lets the building’s past speak while focusing squarely on the plate.
Chef Alberto Rizzo leads a kitchen that takes inspiration from Sicilian tradition but isn’t bound by it. The cooking is described as “creative, mature, decisive, and rich in flavour” – a modern cuisine that incorporates techniques and ideas from beyond the island, reflecting the Rizzo brothers’ northern Italian roots. Dishes express a deep knowledge of local ingredients, from Nebrodi hazelnuts to Salina capers, without ever feeling nostalgic. The result is a seasonal menu that feels both rooted and fresh.
The wine cellar is a major draw. Housed in the former stables of the palazzo, it holds more than 650 Italian and international labels, selected over decades by brothers Andrea and Alberto Rizzo. The list spans timeless classics, 1990s barrique wines, natural and biodynamic bottles, and the so-called “fruit wine” of Maronian memory. This depth earned the restaurant a Michelin Recommended distinction, which nods to both the kitchen’s consistency and the cellar’s ambition.
Diners can choose from tasting paths – an 8-course, a 6-course, and a vegetarian option – or order à la carte. The cooking is grounded in research: “Our dishes express research and knowledge,” the restaurant notes, and that shows in combinations like conchiglioni with creamed cod, yellow peppers, dried tomato, smoked potato, mint, and Salina capers, or cassatelle with sheep’s ricotta, “pittinicchi” ragù, and wild fennel.
Osteria dei Vespri opened in 1999 as an enoteca with kitchen, evolving alongside Palermo’s cultural renaissance. More than two decades later, it remains a place where history and modern Sicilian cuisine meet – quietly, confidently, and with a glass of something excellent in hand.
