The story
On Via Maggiore in the San Biagio hamlet, the unassuming façade of Antica Trattoria al Gallo 1909 hides a remarkable interior. The building, with its Liberty-style furnishings, stained glass, sculptures, and paintings, carries a D’Annunzio aura – a setting as carefully curated as the menu. A member of the Association of Italy’s Historical Establishments since 2010, this trattoria is a testament to a family tradition that began in 1909 when Giuseppe Turicchia purchased the former horse stables and inn.
The story is one of resilience: the original inn and stables were destroyed by bombing in 1944, but the restaurant and family home survived. Giuseppe, along with his son Umberto and daughter-in-law Verdiana, rebuilt and renamed the establishment Antica Trattoria al Gallo 1909. Today, Ferdinando Turicchia and his son Umberto (a certified sommelier by the Italian Association of Sommeliers) run the restaurant, preserving the legacy into its fourth generation.
At the heart of the kitchen is chef Delia Clapiz, Ferdinando’s wife, with over forty years of experience and a degree in Arts from Venice. She oversees both the carefully selected menus and the Liberty-style décor, ensuring the restaurant’s secular atmosphere remains intact. Her background in the arts is evident in the meticulous presentation of the food and the harmony of the dining rooms.
The menu honours the gastronomic tradition of Ravenna, focusing on local specialities with seasonal ingredients. Hand-made pasta, Adriatic Sea blue fish, truffle, wild asparagus, game, and mushrooms from the hills of Romagna feature prominently. This classic Italian cuisine is prepared with a respect for time-honoured methods, allowing the ingredients to speak for themselves. The 2026 Michelin Recommended award recognises the consistent quality and authenticity that have made Antica Trattoria al Gallo 1909 a destination for both locals and visitors seeking the true flavours of the region.
