The story
Founded in 2005 by Agostino Salvatore, La Cascina 1899 has become a reference point for authentic Calabrian cuisine and artisan food production. Located on the statale 106 in Rocella Jonica, just outside Siderno, this workshop and store brings the flavours of the region to life through careful, traditional methods.
The name itself evokes a sense of heritage, and the team’s philosophy is rooted in respect for the land. They source only the finest raw ingredients, rely on long natural leavening, and keep most of the work manual. No preservatives or artificial colourings are used. The star ingredient is the bergamot of Reggio di Calabria, a citrus fruit whose unique aroma and flavour are woven into many of their creations – from chocolates and creams to liqueurs and jams.
La Cascina 1899 is best known for its artisanal panettoni and colombe, prepared with lievito madre and slow fermentation. Their product range also includes torroni, small pastries, chocolate bars, honey, marmalades, and a line of natural liqueurs. Each item reflects a deep connection to Calabrian culinary tradition.
The Michelin guide has recognised this commitment, awarding La Cascina 1899 a Recommended status for 2026 – a testament to the quality and consistency of what they produce. Whether you visit for a tasting, to buy gifts, or to enjoy their catering and outdoor seating, you’ll find a place that honours the past while sharing it generously.
For lovers of classic Calabrian cuisine, La Cascina 1899 is more than a shop; it’s a destination where the region’s flavours are preserved and celebrated.
