The story
At Osteria da Afro in Spilimbergo, the spirit of the old-fashioned osteria lives on. The restaurant describes its own secret as "calore e semplicità" – warmth and simplicity – a quality that makes guests feel at home without sacrificing the pleasure of fine country cooking. Whether seated by a crackling fire in winter or on the flowered terrace overlooking the garden in summer, the experience is one of genuine hospitality.
The kitchen focuses on local specialties, with an ever-changing menu that follows the seasons. In winter, expect hearty dishes like mallard, free-range chicken, stuffed pigeon, mixed boiled meats, creamy cod, and Fassona beef tartare, alongside comforting soups of barley and beans or tripe. Spring brings wild herbs, asparagus, and risottos with seasonal mushrooms. Summer highlights fresh vegetables from the garden patron Dario tends with passion. Desserts are all homemade: apple cake, fruit tarts, fruit mousses, and the house’s signature "crema alla Afro" – a specialty the restaurant says cannot be described, only tasted.
Dario personally oversees the wine list, which numbers around 300 labels from regional, national, and international producers. His expertise in pairings ensures every dish is matched with the right bottle.
Osteria da Afro has earned a Michelin Recommended distinction, a testament to its refined yet unpretentious approach. The restaurant is also a bar and a small hotel, offering eight comfortable rooms. It is a welcoming landmark in Spilimbergo, just steps from the historic center and the famous mosaic school.
