The story

Al Gatto Nero, Turin: Timeless Piedmontese Cooking and Award-Winning Wine

A Turin Classic

Since the mid‑20th century, Al Gatto Nero has been a fixture on Corso Filippo Turati. The restaurant’s own words describe dishes “dressed in simplicity, wrapped in taste,” and a walk through its dining room feels like stepping into a living family album. Photographs on the walls trace the restaurant’s story from the 1930s onward, showing generations of the Manfredi family, the staff, and even President Sandro Pertini and actor Marcello Mastroianni, who were regulars. The atmosphere is unhurried and welcoming, built on the kind of service that has been refined over decades.

The Food and the Cellar

The menu is a testament to Piedmontese tradition. Antipasti include a warm seafood salad (a signature since 1960), a tortino of anchovies with San Marzano tomatoes, or chicken livers and hearts with sage. First courses feature paccheri with a five‑hour beef ragu, pappardelle with duck ragu in orange and Barbaresco, and spaghetti alla Peppino Fiorelli. Secondi range from a Florentine‑style T‑bone steak to sole meunière and veal kidney trifolato with Tio Pepe sherry and fava beans.

The wine list has earned the restaurant a Wine Spectator Best of Award of Excellence. As Gambero Rosso’s critic noted, it “transudes personality, competence, and passion.” The cellar is deep in Piedmontese bottles, with thoughtful selections that complement the kitchen’s earthy, robust cooking.

A Living Tradition

Al Gatto Nero’s identity is rooted in continuity. Piermichele Gamba, whose words appear on the menu, captures it best: “the embrace is maternal, the step is solid like a father’s, the patience that of grandparents.” This is a place where the past is not preserved in aspic but lived daily—where the same dishes, the same warmth, and the same devotion to quality have made it a beloved institution in Turin.
