The story

Angiolina: Bib Gourmand Seafood Osteria in Marina di Pisciotta, Cilento

A Family Osteria by the Sea

In the small fishing village of Marina di Pisciotta, Angiolina has been a fixture since the late 1950s. The restaurant describes itself as “a frontier fairy tale” – a place where the authentic, solitary character of the Cilento coast meets the warmth of a family-run osteria. The sign above the door reads “Ristorante Angiolina,” but the spirit is that of a traditional marinara tavern, rooted in the rhythms of the sea and the land.

Tradition on the Plate

Angiolina’s cooking is deeply Campanian, drawing on the products of the surrounding waters and gardens. The kitchen works with alici di menaica – anchovies caught with a wide-mesh net that allows only the largest fish to be taken, a method that has sustained local fishing for generations. The day’s catch arrives each morning from Pisciotta’s fishermen, and seasonal vegetables come from nearby gardens, prepared as Angiolina herself taught.

The menu reflects this simplicity and respect for ingredients. Antipasti like the Piacere, Cilento! plate bring together local cured meats, cacioricotta goat cheese, and marinated anchovies. Primi include caserecce with Cicerale chickpeas, baby squid, and rosemary, or the spaghettoni “Don Peppino” with shelled prawns, garlic, and toasted bread. Among the secondi, calamari stuffed with zucchini and stracciata di bufala, and a classic mixed fry of anchovies, squid, and white shrimp stand out. Traditional dishes such as alici “mbuttunate” (boned anchovies stuffed with egg, ricotta, and tomato) and melenzana “nchiappata” (stuffed eggplant in tomato sauce) celebrate the region’s cucina povera.

A Bib Gourmand Recognition

Angiolina holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand, an award that highlights good quality cooking at a reasonable price. It is a fitting nod to the restaurant’s philosophy: honest, flavourful food that stays true to its place. The Bib Gourmand underscores what regulars have known for decades – that this osteria offers a genuine taste of the Cilento coast without pretence.

The Setting

Pisciotta sits within the Cilento and Vallo di Diano National Park, about 100 kilometres south of Salerno. The restaurant is located in the Marina district, steps from the sea, with outdoor seating available. The atmosphere is intimate and welcoming – a place where the sounds and smells of the kitchen drift through the room, and the focus remains squarely on the food and the company.
