The story
Ai Gondolieri began in the early decades of the 1900s as an old inn where residents and workers of the Dorsoduro district would gather for simple meals, a glass of wine, and a game of cards. Its original insignia, in 40-year-old characters, is protected as a historic landmark by the city of Venice. Today, the restaurant is owned by Giovanni Trevisan, who took over in 1987 and has carefully restored its identity while creating a place that honours the ancient traditions of Venice. The restaurant is a short walk from the Salute Church and the Accademia Gallery, in the heart of the city.
The cooking at Ai Gondolieri is firmly rooted in the lagoon. The restaurant’s strengths are the first fruits of the lagoon, always seasonal, fresh homemade pasta with its thousand facets, and meat, prepared in the best tradition of the Gondoliers. The menu changes with the market, and the wine list offers a careful selection of Veneto wines by the glass, from a Soave to a Valpolicella Ripasso, alongside classic Venetian aperitivi such as Spritz and Bellini. The restaurant also offers a wine bar with a lighter menu for a quick but quality bite.
The restaurant has long been a favourite with Venetians and visitors alike. Guests of the nearby Guggenheim Foundation, as well as critics, artists, and museum directors, are regulars. The list of personalities who have dined here includes the late French President François Mitterrand, artists such as Chihuly and Carla Fracci, and actors like Liz Taylor, Meryl Streep, and Woody Allen. Ai Gondolieri has also built a reputation for catering and banqueting, organising events for up to 2,000 people, including outdoor receptions at the Guggenheim Foundation on the Grand Canal terrace. The restaurant’s commitment to authentic Venetian cuisine and gracious hospitality earned it a Michelin Recommended distinction, a recognition that reflects the consistency and care of everything that comes from the kitchen.
