The story
NAKAGAWA in Fukuoka presents a seasonal Italian cooking style shaped by Chef Hideki Nakagawa’s years of training across Italy, Tokyo, and regional Japan. He opened his first venture in April 2013 and later launched NAKALABO to experiment with cross-cultural techniques before establishing this location as his flagship in June 2018. The menu reflects what he calls his own interpretation of Italian cuisine, weaving Kyushu harvests and local market finds into familiar frameworks. This steady evolution earned the restaurant a fourteen point Gault&Millau rating, recognizing how the kitchen balances established technique with quiet innovation.
White walls and natural wood tones create a calm backdrop for the dining room, which centers around a glass enclosed kitchen where guests watch the preparation unfold. The space holds eighteen table seats alongside two private rooms designed for celebrations or intimate gatherings. Staff members who also raise children in their own families ensure younger guests receive attentive service and customized menus that match their preferences. Every course arrives in individual glassware, allowing the team to adjust portion sizes and pacing according to each party.
The beverage program builds its identity around precise course by course matching rather than a static list. Guests choose from three, five, or seven selections featuring wines drawn from an Italian focused cellar of over one hundred twenty bottles. A dedicated non alcoholic option replaces grape wine with carefully steeped Taiwanese tea prepared at temperatures calibrated to complement each dish. Corkage remains available for those who prefer to bring their own vintage, while sommeliers gladly adjust serving volumes to suit individual rhythms.
