The story
Kenichi Koyama introduced his version of French cuisine to Hiroshima when he opened Le Jardin Gourmand in 1990. His early apprenticeships took him from Geneva and Bern to classic kitchens in Annecy, Auxerre, and Paris. He returned home to establish a dining room that has remained under his direction for more than three decades. The restaurant now occupies its current Fuso Higashi-machi location, having moved here in 2009 after earlier addresses in Arupaku and Kusatsu Shinmachi.
The menu relies on produce harvested from his own vegetable garden alongside carefully sourced items from regional farmers. This direct relationship with local growers allows the kitchen to build French techniques around seasonal Hiroshima ingredients. Dishes reflect a quiet precision rather than theatrical presentation. Guests often notice how the careful preparation highlights the natural texture of vegetables and proteins without heavy sauces or unnecessary garnish.
A recent Gault&Millau rating of 15.5 reflects the steady refinement that has defined the kitchen since its inception. That score builds upon years of consistent praise, including previous Michelin stars and a Guide de la Table three-hat designation. The cooking style remains anchored in classical technique while adapting to the specific rhythms of the Setouchi harvest. Every plate demonstrates a clear line of thought that prioritizes ingredient integrity over complex construction.
