The story
Arigato, a small Japanese restaurant in Nara’s Gakuen Kita district, invites guests to enjoy the seasons simply. The kitchen uses carefully selected ingredients, preparing them with a focus on fundamentals. The day’s freshest fish becomes sashimi; grilled dishes show thoughtful technique. A small hot pot course lets the richness of the dashi merge with seasonal produce. Dishes are presented on thoughtfully chosen tableware, so the meal appeals to the eye as well as the palate.
The restaurant is run by a husband-and-wife duo who create an intimate, at-home atmosphere. The interior features a counter made of hinoki (Japanese cypress), with just eight seats. This setting works well for solo diners, couples, or small groups marking a special occasion.
Arigato offers a set course menu for both lunch and dinner. The evening courses range from ¥13,000 to ¥20,000 (tax included), with the higher tiers designed to be enjoyed alongside sake – smaller portions, more variety. The kitchen is open to discussing the contents and price. At lunch, a single course priced at ¥7,300 gives a taste of the season’s best.
Arigato’s honest, seasonal cooking has earned it a Michelin Recommended mention for 2026. It is a place where the chef’s respect for ingredients and the warmth of the couple’s hospitality come together in a thoroughly Japanese dining experience.
