The story
In the heart of Nara’s old merchant quarter, Naramachi, a Meiji-era sake brewery residence has been transformed into an intimate hotel. Within its walls, LE UN occupies what was once the building’s dirt-floor work area – now a counter restaurant where guests watch dishes prepared with precision.
The space retains the original high ceilings, exposed beams, and the quiet dignity of a Japanese townhouse. It seats only a handful of diners, creating a direct connection between chef and guest.
LE UN’s kitchen works with the region’s finest ingredients: seasonal vegetables, local meats, and fresh seafood from nearby waters. The cuisine is French in technique, but the soul is unmistakably Nara. Each plate highlights the natural flavours of the land, from tender produce to carefully sourced proteins.
The restaurant also draws on the building’s sake-brewing heritage. The adjacent sake brewery, Nara Toyosawa Shuzo, provides a curated selection of their finest brews – a fitting pairing for the refined, ingredient-driven dishes.
In 2026, LE UN earned a Michelin Recommended distinction, a nod to its quiet excellence
