The story
In the historic Naramachi district of Nara-shi, Ristorante L'incontro brings a deeply personal vision of Italian cuisine to a 100-year-old renovated townhouse. The name itself means “encounter” or “serendipity” in Italian, and the restaurant is built on connections: with guests, with local producers, and with the land.
Owner-chef Nishioka grew up in Naramachi, where his grandmother’s family home once stood. He believes the space—now a warm, artful blend of Japanese and European aesthetics—called him back. Every ingredient arrives from producers whose farms he has visited personally, ensuring that only ingredients with a story and integrity make it to the kitchen. The restaurant works with a network of small farms and foragers across Japan, from the wild game of Kagoshima to the Yamato sheep raised in nearby Yamazoe village.
The kitchen is a workshop of total craftsmanship. Pasta, bread, cured meats like prosciutto and salami, anchovies, bottarga, and even limoncello are all made in-house. Whole animals and fish are broken down on the premises, with nothing wasted—bones and offcuts are transformed into stocks, sauces, and charcuterie. During hunting season, Nishioka himself takes up a rifle, holding a hunter’s license, and occasionally the game he brings back appears on the menu.
Diners can choose from set courses at lunch and dinner, with the option for à la carte on return visits. The cooking is refined yet direct, presented on beautiful plates sourced from Europe and Japan. Wine lovers will find over 100 labels, mostly Italian, alongside house-made digestivi and a thoughtful selection of beers and sake.
Ristorante L'incontro has been listed in the Michelin Guide for 2026, a recognition that aligns with its quiet, serious dedication to ingredient-driven Italian cuisine in the heart of ancient Nara.
