The story
Just a short walk from JR Nara Station, Tempura Hattori has quickly made a name for itself with a focused, creative take on Japanese cuisine. The restaurant, which opened in 2024, offers a single omakase course centered on tempura that is notably light and refined. The young chef’s stated goal is to create an "easy-on-the-stomach" tempura—a promise that sets the tone for the entire meal.
The dining room is intimate, with just six counter seats that place guests directly in front of the action. From this perch, you watch the chef work, hearing the gentle sizzle as each ingredient hits the oil. The atmosphere is quiet and focused, allowing the food to speak for itself. The restaurant’s design, with both counter and private room options, makes it suitable for a range of occasions, from a solo dinner to a small gathering.
The tempura showcases the best of Nara’s local bounty. The course begins with a hassun (seasonal appetizer) before moving into a parade of carefully selected ingredients. Look for prawns served head and all, the head filled with rich miso; seasonal vegetables like broccoli, burdock, and persimmon; and local specialties such as venison from Uda. Standout dishes include a sweet potato tempura and a creative "daikon-oroshi tempura" (grated radish tempura). The meal concludes elegantly with a tencha (tempura over rice in broth) and a house-made iced tea sorbet. A selection of local sake is available to complement the meal. This dedication to quality and creativity has earned the restaurant a place in the Michelin guide for 2026, a well-deserved recognition for one of Nara’s most promising Japanese dining destinations.
