The story

Ajikitcho Horieten: Michelin-Starred Kaiseki in Osaka's Kitahorie

In Osaka’s Kitahorie district, Ajikitcho Horieten occupies a quietly elegant sukiya-style house, a deliberate retreat from the city’s pulse. Built three decades ago, the building preserves a traditional wood-and-plaster aesthetic that feels both timeless and intimate. Here, the restaurant serves only omakase kaiseki – a chef’s-choice menu built around the seasons.

The cuisine is thoroughly Japanese, drawing on carefully selected seasonal ingredients, many from the Kansai region. The kitchen follows the fundamentals of Japanese cooking, coaxing natural umami from each component. Courses are composed with attention to plating and vessel choice, reflecting the calendar through food. Dinner courses range from ¥22,000 to ¥55,000 (tax included), with lunch available from ¥16,500. The restaurant holds a Michelin 1 Star (2026), a recognition that aligns with the precision and depth of the cooking.

The dining room is entirely private, with only tatami-floored individual rooms on the second floor. Each room is decorated with seasonal arrangements, contributing to the sense of calm. The space accommodates from two to twenty guests, and children are welcome (high chairs and a children’s menu are available). The restaurant is strictly reservation-only, requiring booking by the previous day.

Service is attentive but unobtrusive, matching the serene atmosphere. There is no a la carte – the kaiseki experience is entirely omakase, allowing the chef to respond to the best ingredients of the day. The result is a meal that feels both deliberate and unhurried, a quiet celebration of seasonal Japanese food in one of Osaka’s most refined settings.
