La Baie: Michelin-Starred French Fine Dining in Osaka

On the fifth floor of The Ritz-Carlton, Osaka, La Baie offers a refined French dining experience that has earned a Michelin star for fifteen years. The name means "Bay" in French, a nod to the restaurant's deep connection to seafood – live blue lobsters are kept in a special tank in the kitchen to ensure peak freshness.

Chef de Cuisine Christophe Gibert has led the kitchen since 2006. A native of Brittany, he trained at patisserie and delicatessen school before honing his skills at the world-famous Monte-Carlo Sporting, celebrated Parisian restaurants La Table d'Anvers and Lucas Carton, and the Hotel Le Negresco in the south of France. He arrived in Osaka as sous chef in 2002 and was promoted four years later, bringing a wealth of experience in classic techniques and fresh seafood cookery.

Gibert’s cooking blends traditional French technique with contemporary inspiration. He sources the finest seasonal ingredients from both France and Japan, creating dishes that are as visually striking as they are flavourful. The kitchen also maintains a live tank for precious homard bleu (blue lobster), a signature ingredient. Each tasting menu is a progression of courses – from appetisers and consommé to fish, meat and sometimes foie gras or wagyu beef – designed to highlight the purity of the ingredients.

The wine program is equally impressive. With over 400 labels ranging from rare vintage bottles to New World selections, the sommelier offers thoughtful pairings for every course. The restaurant's commitment to wine excellence has been recognised by Wine Spectator with a Best of Award of Excellence. La Baie is also listed among the world’s top 1000 restaurants in the 2026 La Liste ranking.

The dining room seats 46, with a private dining space for 6 to 12 guests called the Riedel Room – the only private dining room in Japan named after the renowned glassmaker. Its classic European interiors provide an elegant, intimate setting for special occasions.

For those seeking exceptional French cuisine in Osaka, La Baie delivers a memorable experience rooted in craftsmanship and a genuine respect for tradition.
