The story

Le Caneton, Osaka – Refined French Cuisine with Duck & Foie Gras Specialties

At the edge of Osaka’s Tanimachi district, Le Caneton occupies a quiet corner with just seven counter seats. The name, French for “duckling,” hints at the restaurant’s unwavering focus: duck and foie gras, executed with the precision of a chef who trained in France and spent years perfecting his craft.

Chef Tomokazu Yurikusa

After cooking school, Tomokazu Yurikusa moved to Alsace, where he trained at the two-starred Le Cerf. Returning to Japan, he worked at Hotel New Otani Osaka and later at the French restaurant Sakura under Dominique Corby, sharpening his skills with duck and foie gras. In October 2007 he opened Le Caneton, and since 2014 the restaurant has been selected in the Michelin Guide.

Two Signature Specialties

The kitchen’s pride is its foie gras—sourced from a renowned French brand and treated according to season. The foie gras risotto, a house signature, draws regular praise. Equally essential is the roast duck from Tsumura Honten, a long-established purveyor in Osaka. The breast meat is aged several days to concentrate flavour, then cooked low and slow for tenderness before the skin is crisped to order.

The Dining Experience

The counter seats seven, placing diners side by side in a subdued, adult atmosphere warmed by soft lighting. The menu changes monthly, always built around these two pillars. Lunch courses start at 8,000 yen for six dishes; dinner’s omakase course runs eight courses at 12,100 yen and includes the foie gras preparation. A pairing course, featuring wines from a 300-bottle list (mostly French, with selections from Germany, Japan and New Zealand), is available for both meals.

Le Caneton’s French cooking respects tradition while weaving in Japanese ingredients, resulting in a style that feels both grounded and personal. The Michelin Recommended award reflects the kitchen’s consistency and the chef’s long dedication.
