The story
In the heart of Osaka’s Kitashinchi district, Numata occupies the seventh floor of a quiet building, offering an intimate counter dining experience. With just eight seats, the restaurant focuses entirely on the guest’s evening—whether for a celebration, a business dinner, or a quiet date. The space is deliberately calm, the service attentive without intrusion, and the cooking takes place directly in front of you.
Numata operates on a single omakase course, priced at 28,000 yen (plus service charge). The chef selects the finest seasonal ingredients and applies the full range of tempura techniques refined over years of practice. The result is a progression of light, crisp tempura that highlights the natural flavours of each element—seafood and vegetables chosen for the day. The course changes with the seasons and market availability, so no two visits are identical.
This is Japanese cuisine at its most focused: the batter, the oil temperature, the timing—each detail matters. The chef’s skill is evident in every piece, from the delicate shrimp to the seasonal vegetables. The counter allows you to watch the process, to see the ingredients transformed in seconds, and to eat them at the exact moment they are ready. The atmosphere is one of quiet respect for the craft.
Numata’s commitment to quality has earned it a Michelin two-star rating, a recognition of its “excellent cooking.” The award speaks to the precision of the tempura, the quality of the ingredients, and the overall experience of dining here. It is a destination for those who appreciate the highest level of Japanese tempura, served in a setting that values both tradition and personal attention.
