The story
Rooots Nakanoshima is the Osaka-born project of chef Seiji Nakatado, who already runs a celebrated restaurant in Hiroshima. While his Hiroshima restaurant focuses on local terroir, Rooots Nakanoshima takes a broader approach: sourcing premium, rare and special ingredients from across Japan. The result is a contemporary dining experience that feels distinct from its predecessor.
The kitchen works with a constantly changing palette of seasonal products. Two courses are offered: a standard menu and an upgrade version that replaces the main meat course with either Takenoya Vine Beef or Ibusana Beef, depending on what is at its best that day.
A glass-walled walk-in cellar holds over five hundred bottles, ranging from grand crus to rare collectibles. Guests are invited to browse and select directly – a tactile, informal counterpoint to the precision of the meal.
The space seats just ten at a counter, creating a direct connection between diner and chef. Smart casual is the recommended dress code; strong perfumes are discouraged to keep the focus on the food. The restaurant is also available for private hire for parties of six to ten.
In 2026, Rooots Nakanoshima earned a Michelin 1 Star, a testament to the high quality of its cooking. It joins a small group of Osaka restaurants where contemporary cuisine is treated with both ambition and restraint.
