The story
In the quiet streets of Osaka's Fukushima district, via del emme offers a distinctly personal interpretation of Italian cuisine. The name itself carries meaning: "via" is Italian for road, "emme" stands for M—the road traveled and the road ahead. Chef-owner Kenichi Maeda opened the restaurant over nine years ago, and in 2025 the Michelin Guide Kyoto-Osaka 2026 awarded it a Bib Gourmand, a nod to both quality and value.
Maeda runs the kitchen with a quiet, steady hand. The restaurant's website speaks of "cherishing each day's work" to bring joy to guests. Seasonal changes drive the menu: spring brings strawberry and prosciutto insalata, pistachio mousse with kumquat compote; winter sees an elaborate osechi box of two dozen handmade appetizers—abalone, lobster, caviar, wagyu roast beef, venison terrine, foie gras, and cheeses—all designed to pair well with wine.
The interior, glimpsed in photographs, feels understated and welcoming. Air conditioning, lunch and dinner service, and wine pairing are available, making it a comfortable choice for a leisurely meal.
via del emme's cooking is Italian, but grounded in the ingredients and seasons of Japan. The Bib Gourmand recognition reflects a kitchen that delivers technique and flavour without pretense. Chef Maeda's goal is straightforward: that guests enjoy the time spent here. It is an approach that has earned a loyal following and kept the restaurant busy into its tenth year.
