The story
In the heart of Osaka's Kitashinchi district, YUNiCO offers a singular take on Italian cuisine. The name itself, derived from the Italian word for "one of a kind," sets the tone for a restaurant that values individuality over trends. Here, owner-chef Atsushi Yamamoto crafts a menu that is both simple and deeply considered, earning the restaurant a Michelin star for its high-quality cooking.
Chef Yamamoto’s path to opening YUNiCO in 2020 was shaped by years of discipline. After graduating from culinary school, he honed his skills in Kyoto before joining the prestigious Ristorante Hiro group, where he served as head chef at their Osaka and Aoyama locations. His cooking philosophy is one of restraint: letting quality seasonal ingredients speak for themselves, with subtle Japanese accents woven into the Italian framework.
The dining experience at YUNiCO is built around an omakase course, currently priced at 18,700 yen. The menu changes with the seasons, but certain signatures have become staples—a small hamburger that playfully incorporates Chinese elements, or a dish of sea bream with a crispy skin and succulent flesh, paired with smoked fruit tomatoes. Pasta is handmade in-house, and main courses might feature beef or, depending on the season, game like duck or venison. A wine pairing, centered on European bottles selected by the chef, is a natural complement.
The restaurant seats just eight at a sleek counter, where guests can watch the kitchen’s precise work unfold. For more private occasions—family celebrations or business dinners—a single private room accommodates up to six guests. The atmosphere is calm and understated, designed for lingering over a meal.
In April 2026, YUNiCO relocated to a new address within Kitashinchi, adding a private room to its original counter-only format. The move marks a new chapter for this quietly confident restaurant, where the focus remains firmly on the plate.
