The story
In 2022, chef Takumi Nagami opened Asakusa Nagami in the Kannonura area of Asakusa, deliberately choosing a spot away from the district’s famous bustle. The restaurant sits near the historic Senso-ji temple, in a neighborhood that still carries the weight of Edo-era culture. The concept is straightforward: let the ingredients speak. As the chef writes, the goal is “making the most of the characteristics of ingredients,” with each dish built around carefully sourced and refined produce.
Nagami was born in Tottori Prefecture and graduated from the Tsujicho Group Japanese Cuisine College in Osaka. He trained at Roan Kikunoi Kiyamachi in Kyoto, then worked at Shiratsugu Ishidobashi in Fukuoka. Before opening his own restaurant, he served as the official chef at the residence of the Japanese Minister in London. That breadth of experience—from Kyoto’s exacting kaiseki tradition to the demands of diplomatic dining—shapes the precise, respectful cooking at Asakusa Nagami.
The restaurant offers two omakase (chef’s selection) courses. Lunch runs six dishes: a first dish, sashimi, soup, grilled fish, rice with miso soup and pickles, and dessert. The evening course expands to nine dishes, adding a seasonal composition and a shiizakana (a substantial palate-cleanser) and finishing with green tea. Prices are ¥13,200 for lunch and ¥24,200 for dinner, inclusive of tax and service. Reservations are required by the day before. The menu changes monthly and adapts to market availability.
Dining is at a counter, with the chef working directly in front of guests. The atmosphere is calm and unhurried—a counterpoint to the city outside. The restaurant has been recognized with a Michelin Recommended award for 2026, a nod to the quality and consistency of its Japanese cuisine.
Takeout is currently on hiatus. The restaurant is open Tuesday through Saturday for lunch (12:00–14:30, last order 13:00) and dinner (18:00–22:30, last order 20:00). Sunday and Monday are regular closing days, with occasional irregular closures depending on reservations.
