The story
Bistrot Vivienne is tucked beside the Kabukiza theatre in Ginza, just minutes from the Ginza 4-chome crossing. It is a place where wine lovers and casual diners alike gather for an evening of good food and conversation. Owner and sommelier Junko Saito spent four years in Paris, working at a wine shop where she saw customers joyfully selecting bottles and sharing opinions. That inspiration led her back to Tokyo, where she worked in wine shops and other bistros before opening Bistrot Vivienne in 2008.
Chef Aiku Takada brings nearly a decade of experience from L’ecrin, a renowned Ginza restaurant known for classic French cuisine with a modern sensibility. Before that, he worked in Normandy, Dijon, Montpellier and Alsace, learning to pair regional dishes with local wines. “The biggest thing I learned was that a passion to cook and a consideration for your diners is more important than culinary knowledge,” he says. At Bistrot Vivienne, his cooking reflects that philosophy: dishes made to be joyously savored with wine.
The wine list at Bistrot Vivienne is the heart of the experience. Regulars say it rivals those of top French restaurants, yet it is offered at bistro-friendly prices. Saito still selects many wines by speaking directly with French importers in their native language. Whether you are a wine enthusiast or a curious beginner, the list invites exploration alongside the menu.
The menu changes with the seasons, but signature dishes include pâté de campagne, chicken liver and foie gras mousse, and a whole roasted French spring chicken. Fresh seafood arrives daily from Hakodate, turned into a rich bouillabaisse. Chef Takada’s cassoulet and red-wine braised beef cheek are comforting classics. For guests who want to start simply, small plates like homemade pickles and rillettes are available from under 1,000 yen.
Since the 2023 Michelin Guide, Bistrot Vivienne has held the Bib Gourmand award, a mark of good quality and good value cooking. It is a bistro that surpasses itself – authentic French cuisine in Ginza, without pretension.
