The story

CRAFTALE Tokyo: Michelin-starred French restaurant in Aobadai, Meguro

CRAFTALE

In the quiet second-floor space above a street in Aobadai, Meguro, CRAFTALE offers a distinctly personal take on French cuisine. The restaurant’s name is a portmanteau of “CRAFT” (handiwork) and “TALE” (story) — a philosophy that chef Shinya Otsuchihashi brings to life with every dish.

Otsuchihashi’s path to opening CRAFTALE in September 2015 was shaped by rigorous training. After graduating from the Tsuji Culinary Institute’s French school in 2004, he worked at top Tokyo kitchens including Joël Robuchon in Ebisu, then moved to Paris to cook at the neo-bistro Saturne. Returning to Japan, he helped open Restaurant Anis in Hatagaya before taking the reins at CRAFTALE.

The cooking here is ingredient-driven, guided by a simple but exacting principle: respect the producer’s love and passion, and let the craft of your hands tell the story. Otsuchihashi focuses on drawing out the taste, color, aroma and form of each element, pushing toward possibilities not yet seen. The result is French cuisine that feels both grounded and exploratory — earning the restaurant a Michelin star for its high-quality cooking.

The dining room itself reflects this balance. The interior is deliberately minimalist, an inorganic shell warmed by handmade wooden and stone vessels created specifically for CRAFTALE. These natural textures bring a soft, tactile warmth to the space, where guests are invited to feel the provenance of the ingredients. It is a calm, healing atmosphere — a place for unhurried meals that connect you to the land and the people who cultivated the food.

Dinner and lunch are served, with a set lunch menu available and a wine pairing option that complements the seasonal progression of courses. The wine list leans toward个性豊かな natural wines, with selections ranging from approachable glasses to high-end grands crus.

Located on the second floor along the Meguro River, CRAFTALE is a destination for those who appreciate cooking that is both technically refined and emotionally resonant — a quiet story told through craft.
