The story
Daikanyama Issai Kassai is a place where the fresh deliciousness of ingredients is enjoyed alongside excellent sake. The cooking here is neither gimmicky nor overly complicated. Instead, it offers familiar yet original Japanese dishes that become special through careful sourcing and technique.
The owner, Shinji Odahara, spent 30 years in the world of Japanese cuisine. He was the top apprentice of Komei Nakamura, the second-generation "Iron Chef" on the television program Iron Chef. After Nakamura’s independent ventures, Odahara moved to another company, and in 2017 he opened three restaurants in New York City—all of which earned Michelin stars. He returned to Japan, struck out on his own, and opened his first restaurant, Daikanyama Issai Kassai, in 2022. The restaurant has since been recognized with a Michelin Recommended award in the Michelin Guide Tokyo 2026, a natural nod to Odahara’s deep experience.
The menu centers on charcoal-grilled dishes, slowly cooked to bring out a smoky fragrance and satisfying texture. Everyday foods like potato salad and croquettes are elevated to something deeper and more memorable. Seasonal ingredients weave through the offerings, and the sake list is curated to match each dish. Wine is also available, chosen to harmonize with the Japanese food.
The setting is a basement floor in Sarugakucho, with counter dining and a private room. It is an izakaya in spirit—casual enough for a relaxed evening, but refined in execution. Dinner service runs from 17:00, with weekend openings from 16:00. The restaurant is closed on Mondays and every other Sunday.
