The story
El Refugio has been a fixture in Oleiros (A Coruña) for nearly five decades, rooted in the philosophy of cocina de mercado – market cuisine. The kitchen works with top-quality raw ingredients, careful preparation, and precise presentation. This consistency has earned the restaurant a Michelin Recommended distinction, a nod to its enduring place in Galician hospitality.
The menu changes with the market, but the structure is classic: starters, fish and shellfish, meat, and desserts. Starters range from delicate Láminas de Foie con Aceite de Frambuesas to a hearty Caldo Gallego. Seafood is a strength – Ostras, Almejas a la Marinera, Percebes, and Lubrigante (Galician lobster) appear alongside grilled fish like Lubina and Rodaballo. Meat dishes include Entrecote de Ternera, Chuletillas de Cordero Lechal, and a Solomillo gratinado with goat cheese and orange sauce. Desserts stay traditional: Cremoso de Queso, Flan, and Soufflé.
The wine list is a serious undertaking, with more than 700 references from Spain and beyond. The dining room is complemented by a bar and lounge, and there is outdoor seating for warmer months. The atmosphere is welcoming, suited for lunch, dinner, or private parties. With parking, wheelchair access, and Wi-Fi, El Refugio makes itself accessible without sacrificing the warmth of a family-run restaurant.
The Michelin guide’s Recommended award reflects the restaurant’s steady hand: unfussy, market-driven cooking that honors Galicia’s larder.
