The story
A minute’s walk from Higashi-Ginza Station, Ginza Sushi Ichidai Yugo is a counter-style restaurant where chef-owner Yūgo Abe serves traditional Edomae sushi. The restaurant’s name, “Yu-go,” reflects the chef’s own name and his philosophy of offering a warm, personal experience. The atmosphere is intimate and welcoming, with a focus on the craft of sushi-making.
Chef Abe opened the restaurant in 2010, and in 2025, his dedication was recognized with a selection in the Michelin Guide. In his own words, he aims to offer “sincere sushi” that brings a smile to every guest, whether they are a local regular or an international visitor drawn by Tokyo’s growing culinary scene.
The menu centers on Edomae-style nigiri, with a strong emphasis on seasonal ingredients. For lunch, options range from a service set of seven nigiri and a roll to the chef’s omakase (reservation recommended). Dinner offers a full omakase experience, and a la carte additions are available for those who want to explore further. The restaurant also offers takeaway sushi, making it possible to enjoy their Japanese cuisine at home.
Chef Abe’s path to this counter has been marked by resilience. After a serious traffic accident in his tenth year, he credits the encouragement of his guests for keeping the restaurant going. Now in his third year at a new location, he continues to serve with the same dedication. The result is a place where the sushi is as much about the person behind it as it is about the fish.
