The story
Kappo Ryu is an adult hideaway in Tokyo’s Minami-Aoyama district, where the rhythm of the seasons guides every dish. The restaurant takes its name from chef Takahiro Otsuka — Ryu is the character from his given name. Here, he selects the finest seasonal ingredients and translates them into a meal that unfolds with precision and quiet intention.
Otsuka honed his skills at Japanese restaurants in Osaka and Nagoya before serving as chef at a Michelin-starred restaurant in Tokyo. His cooking is rooted in a deep respect for ingredients, letting their individual character shine through careful technique. He works from a counter of just eight seats, with one private room available, ensuring each guest receives his full attention.
Dinner is by reservation only, with two omakase courses. The Ryu Omakase course (seven to eight dishes, 27,500 yen) includes the restaurant’s signature tai chazuke — a comforting bowl of sea bream over rice, finished with broth. The Ryu Selection course (nine to ten dishes, 36,000 yen) adds luxury with black wagyu and seasonal seafood. Both courses are paired with sake or wine chosen to complement the meal.
Kappo Ryu’s dedication to Japanese cuisine earned it a place in the Michelin Guide Tokyo 2026, listed as Recommended. It is a restaurant that values substance over spectacle — a space where time slows, and the food speaks for itself.
