The story
In his twenties, the owner-chef of Katchar Batchar wandered through India, Nepal and Thailand, absorbing the spice-rich aromas and street-food culture that define those countries. Back in Tokyo, he set out to create something beyond conventional Indian cuisine – a style that plays with combinations yet remains grounded in simplicity. “By combining things, we make something simple,” the restaurant’s philosophy reads. That approach leads to curries that are free, enjoyable and not bound by genre.
Situated on the second floor of a building in Minamiotsuka, Katchar Batchar offers counter seating for an intimate view of the open kitchen. Lunch runs from noon to 2:30 pm, dinner from 5 pm to 10 pm, and the space is air-conditioned for comfort. The menu evolves regularly, reflecting the chef’s instinct for pairing ingredients and spices. Drinks are selected to complement each dish, making every visit a fresh encounter with Indian-inspired cooking.
In 2026, Katchar Batchar earned a Michelin Bib Gourmand, an award that celebrates good quality cooking at reasonable prices. It’s a fitting nod to a kitchen that delivers bold, thoughtful Indian dishes without pretence – just vibrant flavours and the honest craft of a chef who learned directly from the streets of South Asia.
