The story
The name La Lune means “moon” in French. For the team, the restaurant is the moon and each guest is the sun — it is only when the sun shines that the moon can glow. This idea of quiet, grateful service runs through everything they do. Since opening in 2002, the kitchen has evolved slowly, guided by relationships with producers they respect. The cooking stays true to the ingredients: straightforward combinations, contrasts in texture and aroma, all made with care.
Chef Keiichiro Nagata began cooking in his hometown of Kumamoto in 1988. He trained at the Takanawa Prince Hotel and later at Évelyne in Shinsen, Tokyo, before heading to France. There he worked at Le Bories in Gordes (Provence), La Maison de Jeanne in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, and Jacques Decoret in Vichy. Returning to Japan in 2000, he became chef at Restaurant Oishi and opened La Lune in Higashiazabu two years later. His path through classic French kitchens is clear in the precise, ingredient-driven cooking on the plate.
La Lune offers both lunch and dinner, with menus built around what is best each month. Dinner has three courses: Saison (four appetizers, a main, and dessert), Petit Saison (three appetizers), and a W Main version with both fish and meat. Lunch offers a choice of two courses. Recent dishes include zucchini sorbet with fritters and abalone liver, foie gras poêlé with plum purée, and a bisque of sawmantis shrimp. Mains range from Iwate pork with cashew paste to French pigeon confit. Desserts like loquat brûlée with thyme sorbet and fig compote with red shiso keep the seasonal focus.
The atmosphere is calm and understated. The dining room lets the food speak, and the service is attentive without fuss. This is a place where the chef’s years of experience in France and Japan come together in a style that is recognisably French yet personal.
In 2026, La Lune was awarded a Michelin Recommended distinction, a fitting acknowledgment of its steady, honest cooking. For those seeking a quiet evening of precise French cuisine in Tokyo, this Higashiazabu address delivers exactly what it promises.
