The story
L’AS brings contemporary French cooking to Tokyo’s Minamiaoyama district, a quiet residential pocket of the city. The restaurant occupies the ground floor of a small building, with an entrance set back behind another shop – a detail that rewards those who seek it out.
The dining room seats 45, with a mix of counter seating and tables. Lunch is served on weekends and holidays only, while dinner runs nightly. The space is air-conditioned and suitable for private parties.
The kitchen works within a modern French idiom, sourcing seasonal ingredients and presenting them with clean, precise technique. Dishes change roughly every few weeks – the next menu update was scheduled for late May at the time of writing. The approach is confident and unfussy, letting the ingredients speak without unnecessary embellishment.
L’AS holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand, the guide’s designation for restaurants that offer good quality cooking at a good value. In a city where Michelin-starred dining often commands a steep price, the Bib Gourmand signals a meal that is both accomplished and accessible – a rare combination in central Tokyo.
The same team runs a sister location in Fukuoka, as well as collaborative concepts in Harajuku, Nagoya, and Osaka, each with its own character. For visitors to Tokyo, the Minamiaoyama address remains the flagship.
