The story

Los Reyes Magos: Authentic Spanish in Tokyo – Bib Gourmand 2026

The Story Behind the Name

Los Reyes Magos – The Three Wise Men – opened on January 6, a date that doubles as Spain’s national holiday and the restaurant’s anniversary. The name pays homage to the Magi who brought gifts to the newborn Jesus. True to that spirit, the restaurant celebrates each year with a complimentary glass of Catalan cava for its guests.

The cuisine is rooted in the traditions of Catalonia and the Basque Country, two of Spain’s most vibrant food regions. The foundation comes from the late owner-chef Watanabe, who trained at the celebrated restaurant La Pineda in Barcelona. His legacy lives on in dishes that balance classic Spanish flavours with the modern tastes of Barcelona today.

What to Expect

The menu is extensive – over 50 tapas, seafood, and meat dishes. Four types of paella are made to order, starting from a single portion. The marinera (seafood paella) is a classic, while the chorizo and chickpea version offers a hearty alternative. All desserts are handmade in-house, and the staff are happy to suggest off-menu items.

Standout dishes include sardines in escabeche, a traditional boquerones-style tapa; tortilla Española, served whole with tomato and aioli; and bacalao in salsa verde, a Basque classic featuring salt cod, white asparagus, and clams. The “grandmother-style” salad of sardines and scrambled eggs comes from a recipe taught to Watanabe by an elderly woman during his time in Spain.

Atmosphere and Recognition

The restaurant seats 28, with counter dining and table service. It has earned a Michelin Bib Gourmand for 2026, a sign of good quality cooking at moderate prices. The space is welcoming, suited for both casual dinners and special celebrations. The average budget is around 7,000 yen, and the wine list features Spanish cavas, sherries, and wines from regions like Ribera del Duero and Rioja.

Los Reyes Magos has been a fixture in Tokyo’s Yoyogi neighbourhood since 1986, drawing locals and visitors alike for its authentic, unpretentious Spanish cooking.
