The story

Onigiri Asakusa Yadoroku: Tokyo's Oldest Onigiri Shop, Michelin Bib Gourmand

A Bowl of Rice, a World of Comfort

Onigiri Asakusa Yadoroku is the oldest onigiri specialty shop in Tokyo, a title it has earned quietly since 1954. Tucked behind the main hall of Sensoji Temple in Asakusa, this small counter and table space has been serving hand-pressed rice balls to locals and visitors for over seven decades. In a city that moves fast, Yadoroku offers something rare: a meal that feels like a pause.

The shop opened in Showa 29, when white rice was still called "gin shari" (silver rice) and considered a treat. From the start, the goal was simple — to make onigiri that anyone, from small children to the elderly, could enjoy. That philosophy remains intact. The rice is Koshihikari, cooked in a large pot. Each ball is wrapped in fragrant Edomae nori, the seaweed sourced from Tokyo Bay. The fillings are carefully selected from across Japan, and the menu changes with the seasons.

The set meals are straightforward: two or three onigiri served with tofu miso soup and takuan (pickled daikon). Prices start at 814 yen for two onigiri. You can choose from a variety of fillings, and if you pick one priced over 320 yen, the difference is simply added. There is no fuss, no unnecessary flourish — just rice, nori, and filling, made by hand to order.

The dining room holds eight counter seats and two tables for eight more. It is a modest, welcoming space, air-conditioned in summer and heated in winter. Takeaway is also available, and the shop will deliver within Asakusa for large orders. The atmosphere is calm, the kind of place where you can eat without hurry.

In 2026, Yadoroku was awarded a Michelin Bib Gourmand, a recognition for good quality, good value cooking. It is an honor that fits the restaurant perfectly: the food is simple, precise, and deeply satisfying. For anyone exploring Tokyo, this is a taste of the city's soul — one onigiri at a time.
