The story
Just steps from Odakyū Sangubashi Station, a quiet counter restaurant has settled into the neighbourhood. The tagline on the website says it plainly: “In Sangubashi, where a slow atmosphere flows, enjoy flexible cuisine, sweets, and drinks.” That flexibility is the heart of roku – a French restaurant that pairs a French chef’s savoury cooking with a pastry chef’s cakes, all served in a tiny, intimate space.
roku is not a one-chef operation. It is a shop run by a pastry chef who makes the cakes and a French chef who prepares the dishes. The menu changes with the seasons and what is available, and the approach is deliberately free‑form. Guests can choose to dine in – the counter seats a handful of people – or pick up a whole cake for takeaway, even a single slice.
Dinner (and lunch, by request) unfolds as an omakase course. Two options exist: a ¥7,700 course that includes amuse‑bouche, two appetisers, a fish course, a meat course, dessert, and a post‑meal drink; and a ¥13,500 course that adds a third appetiser and a souvenir. For celebrations, an anniversary course at ¥15,000 finishes with a custom whole cake and a message. The kitchen asks guests to avoid strong perfumes, so the small room stays focused on the food and the quiet atmosphere.
In a city where French restaurants are abundant, roku has earned a Michelin Recommended citation for 2026. The award is not for flash or formality, but for the honest, precise cooking that comes from a chef who treats French techniques as a starting point, not a script. The pastry work is equally important: the seasonal shortcake and fruit tarts are available to order, and the canelés (three or six per box) have become a takeaway favourite.
The restaurant keeps its hours deliberately limited – lunch from 11:00 to 14:00, dinner from 18:00 to 22:00 (last order at 21:00) – and closes on Wednesdays plus irregular holidays. The contact information is on the site, but the best way to understand roku is to walk past the counter, see the cakes in the display, and let the chef and pastry chef lead the meal.
