About SŌWADŌ

Opened in 2020 in Tokyo’s Shibuya ward, SŌWADŌ (創和堂) is an izakaya by chef Hideaki Sakai. Part of the Sakai Shokai group, the restaurant is built on the philosophy of “和を仕立てる” — tailoring wa, or Japanese harmony. This means a focus on seasonal ingredients, precise cooking, and the seamless pairing of sake with each dish.

The Chef’s Story

Hideaki Sakai began his culinary training in Melbourne, Australia, before returning to Japan to work at restaurants such as Mikasa Kaikan, Zetton, and Namikibashi Nakamura. After opening his first venue, Sakai Shokai, in Shibuya in 2018, he launched SŌWADŌ in 2020. He remains hands-on in the kitchen and regularly visits local producers, sake breweries, and wineries to deepen his understanding of ingredients.

The Dining Atmosphere

The space centers on a counter, letting guests watch the kitchen’s work up close. Lunch and dinner are served, and the restaurant can accommodate private parties. The atmosphere is intentionally warm and unhurried, designed to encourage conversation and connection — what the group calls adding conversation and creating circles.

Recognition

SŌWADŌ earned a Michelin Recommended distinction for 2026, reflecting its dedication to quality and the harmonious balance between seasonal izakaya cooking and expertly chosen sake.
