The story

Berbena, Barcelona – Bib Gourmand small plates and natural wines in Gràcia

The Berbena Way

Berbena is not a restaurant that follows trends—it sets them. On Minerva 6, in the quiet upper reaches of Gràcia, this small, counter-focused dining room operates on its own rhythm. The team’s manifesto, a homage to LCD Soundsystem’s “Losing My Edge,” proudly claims they were there “before anyone”: dadinhos, sourdough, specialty coffee, pet nats, hake roe, monkfish liver, seasonal cabbages. That list is not bragging; it’s a declaration of intent. Berbena’s cooking is ingredient-led, precise, and deeply personal.

The Michelin Bib Gourmand, awarded first in 2020 and renewed annually through 2026, recognises the kind of good-quality, good-value cooking that defines this place. But Berbena’s recognition goes beyond a star rating—it’s a destination for those who value honest technique over gimmicks. The kitchen sends out small plates (“platets”) that change with the market, always anchored in the Mediterranean but open to wider influences. Wines are natural-leaning, sourced from small producers in Germany, France, and beyond, and the team takes them seriously enough to ask guests to skip perfume out of respect for the vintners.

Atmosphere and Ethos

The space is intimate—counter dining and a handful of tables, no high chairs, no “Happy Meals.” The music is as curated as the wine list: Nina Simone, salsa, boogaloo, Gil Scott-Heron. The vibe is unpretentious but exacting. Reservations are released online, and a credit card holds the table; cancel within six hours and there’s a penalty. It’s a small restaurant that runs on respect—for the food, the drink, the staff, and the other diners.

Berbena also operates a second space, Pompa, for larger groups and events. But the heart of the operation remains here, where the team has weathered floods, pandemics, and inflation, and kept cooking. As the manifesto puts it: “The wages, the bills, and the weekend champagne—we pay for them by selling small plates, wine, and desserts. Thank you for understanding.”

That understanding is part of the deal. Berbena’s cuisine isn’t about comfort or compromise; it’s about being present for something real. If the menu doesn’t adapt to vegans, it’s because the kitchen trusts its own vision. The result is a restaurant that feels less like a business and more like a long-running, slightly obsessive project. And it works.
