The story
It started with the grandfather, Antonio, a fair and restaurant waiter. His daughter Mari and her husband Manolo left Seville for Barcelona, and the couple opened a small bar in Molins. Manolo worked the room; Mari, who had never fried an egg, taught herself to cook. She became a master of Spanish home cooking. Their son Jose grew up in the business and eventually took the reins, bringing that same spirit to the heart of Barcelona’s Raval neighbourhood.
Today, Bar Cañete is a lively, welcoming spot where the kitchen honours the family’s Andalusian roots while celebrating the best of Catalan produce. The menu is built around what’s freshest: seafood and fish sourced directly from the Catalan fish markets, and vegetables from local farmers, always in season. As they put it, this is “cuisine for times of crisis in which the public wants to know what they are eating and take refuge in tradition.”
That clarity and honesty have earned Cañete a Michelin Recommended distinction, a nod to its consistent, heartfelt cooking. The atmosphere is warm and unpretentious—counter dining offers a front-row seat to the action, while outdoor seating lets you soak up the Barcelona street life. Whether you come for a quick lunch or a long dinner, the food speaks for itself: direct, generous, and full of flavour.
