The story
On Barcelona’s Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes, Virens makes a strong case for vegetables as the main event. The restaurant, led by chef Rodrigo de la Calle alongside chef Gio Esteve, is built on a philosophy of “cocina plant-forward” — a creative, sustainable approach where local, organic, and seasonal produce takes centre stage.
The menu is a celebration of vegetables, mushrooms, and greens, complemented by a selection of rice dishes and high-quality organic meats and fish. The tasting menu, called Menú Gastrobotánica, presents a progression of snacks, four vegetable courses, a rice dish, a choice of meat, fish, or vegetable, and three desserts. It is a direct expression of the kitchen’s technical skill and respect for the product.
Virens also houses Virens Bar, a more relaxed gourmet space offering classic tapas with the same green focus. For a deeper dive, the restaurant hosts intimate Showcooking events that pair gastronomy with art, as well as a monthly Virens Market where guests can select local seasonal ingredients for a personalised menu.
This commitment to honest, ingredient-driven cooking has earned Virens a place in the Michelin Guide, which recognises it as a Recommended restaurant. It is a clear destination for anyone seeking high-level contemporary Mediterranean cuisine that puts the earth’s bounty first.
