The story
Gotzon Jatetxea sits in Bakio, a coastal town near Bermeo, with the sea and the mountains as constant companions. The restaurant was founded in 1968 by Edurne and Gotzon Longarai. Today, their daughters, Gotzone and Sorkunde Longarai, carry the work forward—Gotzone in the kitchen as chef, Sorkunde as head of the dining room. They describe their approach as working "in tandem, bringing passion and affection to the product and service."
The restaurant's cuisine is rooted in Basque tradition, but it is not static. The Longarai sisters reinterpret family recipes into a current, careful, and specialized style of cooking. They prioritize seasonal, locally sourced ingredients (Km 0) of the highest quality. Given the location, seafood plays a central role in the offering, drawing directly from the nearby Cantabrian Sea.
The dining room and terrace look out over the beach and the distinctive landscape of Bakio, framed by the Burgoa, Garbola, and Jata mountains, with views toward San Juan de Gaztelugatxe. The environment—with its traditional farmhouses, local lemon and vegetable cultivation, and a microclimate ideal for txakoli—shapes the restaurant's identity.
Gotzon Jatetxea has been part of the MICHELIN Guide Spain selection for more than 30 years and has held a Repsol Guide Sun since 2022. These accolades reflect a steady commitment to quality, not a recent flash of recognition.
For those looking to explore further, the restaurant offers an enogastronomic plan pairing its flavors with wines from the D.O. Bizkaiko Txakolina. Two tasting menus are available, at 85 € and 120 € per person, with a minimum of two guests and three days' advance booking required. The experience is built on the same principles as the à la carte: respect for the product, a sense of place, and the warmth of family hospitality.
