The story
A staircase and a vineyard connect two restaurants in the Larrabetzu hillside: the three-Michelin-starred Azurmendi, and its younger sibling, ENEKO. Opened in 2017, ENEKO represents chef Eneko Atxa's return to his origins.
The concept is built around the Sutan menu — a Basque word meaning "on fire." Atxa describes it as a direct, honest cuisine that works the territory, preserves local customs, and presents them in a contemporary way. Dishes are cooked live at the pass, brimming with flavour, technique, and tradition.
The restaurant earned a Michelin star in 2017, which Atxa says "rewards the effort of many people — from waiters and cooks to producers." He sees the star as recognition of a kitchen that is close to the customer and deeply rooted in the Basque Country.
Located just outside Bilbao, the restaurant is part of the Azurmendi Group. The atmosphere is welcoming and unpretentious, with an emphasis on the live-fire cooking that defines the menu. Diners can choose the Sutan menu with or without a six-wine pairing.
Eneko Atxa is the driving force. A winner of the National Gastronomy Award for Best Head Chef (2015) and the Best Chef Award in Europe by Madrid Fusion (2019), he brings a philosophy of "back to the origin" to ENEKO. The restaurant itself is a collaborative project that has also extended to Tokyo, with a "brother" restaurant opening there the same year.
For anyone seeking a modern yet grounded expression of Basque cuisine, ENEKO delivers — from the fire to the plate.
